Heavy rainfall has once again created a flood-like situation in Sharma Colony of Kirari, Outer Delhi. Residents are forced to live in difficult conditions as dirty water has entered their homes and even bedrooms, disrupting daily life completely. Despite efforts to pump out the water, a fresh spell of rain on Friday made the situation worse for the locals.
What is the current situation in Sharma Colony?
The water level in the lanes of Sharma Colony has reached 1 to 3 feet deep. After five hours of rain on Friday, the water accumulation increased significantly. Dirty sewage water has mixed with rainwater and entered many houses. People have to wade through sludge and filth just to step out of their homes. Some residents said that water has reached under their beds, spoiling their belongings.
Why are children unable to go to school?
Due to severe waterlogging, daily routines have been badly hit. A large number of children could not go to school on Friday because the streets were filled with knee-deep water. Parents are worried about the safety and health of their kids as the water is contaminated. Schools had just reopened on January 16 after a long winter break, but this waterlogging has again put a brake on attendance.
What is the main reason for this mess?
This problem is not new for the residents. Water has been accumulating here for the past eight months. The main reasons include debris from the Bhalswa landfill being dumped on nearby land, which has blocked drainage channels. Also, the area lacks a proper sewerage network. Faulty sewer line designs have allowed contaminated water to trouble residents for over 11 years now.
What Government projects are planned for relief?
The Delhi government has announced several projects to fix the drainage system in Kirari. They have set a six-month deadline to resolve the waterlogging issue. Here are the details of the upcoming drainage projects:
| Project Name | Length | Budget (Approx) |
|---|---|---|
| Kirari-Mundka Halt Drain | 4.5 km | Rs 220.93 Crore |
| Kirari-Rithala Trunk Drain | 7.2 km | Rs 250.21 Crore |
| Sharma Colony Development | Local | Rs 9.4 Crore |
Officials say these projects will increase the capacity to drain water and provide a permanent solution to the residents of Kirari.
