Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is set to upgrade his security convoy with high-tech bulletproof Range Rover SUVs. The state government has officially started the process to purchase four such luxury vehicles to ensure better protection for VVIPs. Reports confirm that the administration has sanctioned a total budget of over ₹11 crore for this upgrade. This decision marks a significant shift from the Chief Minister’s usual preference for electric or Indian-made vehicles.
Why is the government buying these luxury cars?
The Home Department approved this purchase in July 2025 after a detailed security assessment for leaders with Z+ security cover. Officials believe that advanced ballistic protection is necessary for the Chief Minister during his expanding public engagements. These cars are built to withstand heavy threats, including AK-47 fire and explosions. While Nitish Kumar often uses a Hyundai Ioniq 5 electric car for city travel to support green initiatives, these new SUVs are intended for high-security requirements.
What is the cost and who will use them?
The state government has allocated exactly ₹11,17,29,412 for the purchase of four vehicles. Each bulletproof Range Rover costs approximately ₹2.79 crore. The Transport Department has been tasked with the procurement and implementation of this order. Apart from the Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary is also expected to be a beneficiary of this security upgrade.
