A political controversy has erupted in Delhi after former Vice President Hamid Ansari made comments regarding historical ruler Mahmud of Ghazni. BJP National Spokesperson Syed Shahnawaz Hussain strongly criticized Ansari for describing Ghazni as an “Indian looter” rather than a foreign invader. Hussain termed the statement as a distortion of history and demanded a public apology from the former Vice President.

What did Hamid Ansari say?
The issue began when a video of Hamid Ansari surfaced online and went viral. in the video, he was seen discussing historical narratives about rulers like Mahmud of Ghazni and the Lodi dynasty. Ansari characterized them as “Hindustani lootere” or Indian dacoits.
He suggested that these figures did not come from “outside” in the way traditional textbooks describe them. This interpretation implies a shift from viewing them as foreign aggressors to local figures, which has drawn sharp reaction from political opponents.
BJP calls it an insult to history
Syed Shahnawaz Hussain expressed deep disappointment over the language used by Ansari. He stated that it is unfortunate for a person who held the high constitutional post of Vice President to make such claims. Hussain highlighted that Mahmud of Ghazni is historically known for his invasions, specifically the looting and destruction of the Somnath Temple.
The BJP leader argued that labeling a foreign invader as an “Indian” is an attempt to whitewash history. He insisted that such statements hurt the self-respect of the nation. Other BJP leaders have also joined in the criticism, questioning the stance of opposition parties on this historical narrative.
