Delhi Police has started a major crackdown named Operation Shastra to stop the culture of showing off weapons online. The operation began on February 6 and involves more than 2,000 police personnel. The main target is individuals who post pictures with guns or use abusive language on social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram to create fear among the public.
What action has been taken so far?
The police formed over 500 teams to scan through thousands of accounts. They checked more than 6,000 profiles during this drive. This led to significant results in a short time. Joint Commissioner of Police SK Jain stated that the aim is to ensure public safety and stop people from glorifying gun culture.
- Total Arrests: 83 people have been caught.
- Adults and Minors: Out of those arrested, 67 are adults and 16 are minors.
- FIRs Registered: Police have filed 61 FIRs against the offenders.
- Seizures: 82 weapons and 93 live cartridges were recovered.
Clarification on missing persons rumours
Apart from the operation, Delhi Police also addressed recent rumours about missing girls in the city. Officials said that some people are using paid promotions to spread fake news and create panic. The police warned that strict action will be taken against those spreading such lies for money.
Data shows that missing person cases have actually gone down. In January 2026, 1,777 cases were reported, which is less than the monthly average of 2,000. Since 2016, the police have traced over 1.8 lakh missing people, reuniting them with their families.
