The Delhi administration has assigned important additional responsibilities to two senior IPS officers to ensure smooth operations in key departments. The Home Department issued official orders on Friday regarding these new appointments. Devesh Chandra Srivastava has been given the additional charge of Director General (DG) of Tihar Jail. At the same time, Anil Shukla has been appointed to head the Delhi Home Guards. These moves come after the top posts in these departments remained vacant for over a week.
Who are the officers taking new charges?
Devesh Chandra Srivastava is a seasoned 1995-batch IPS officer of the AGMUT cadre. He is currently serving as the Special Commissioner of Police in the Crime Branch. He is now entrusted with the oversight of the prison administration. Anil Shukla, a 1996-batch IPS officer, is currently the Special Commissioner of the Special Cell. He will now handle the duties of Director General of Home Guards in addition to his current role in the Special Cell.
Why were these appointments made now?
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) needed to fill these vacancies immediately to maintain administrative order. Since permanent candidates could not be selected during the ongoing Parliament session, the department opted for temporary arrangements. Delhi Lt Governor VK Saxena approved these appointments to ensure that work at Tihar Jail and the Home Guard department continues without interruption. These officers will hold these charges until regular incumbents are appointed.
