The Delhi Police has started a massive drive called ‘Operation Shastra’ to control the rising gun culture in the national capital. This special operation aims to stop people from showing off weapons on digital platforms to create fear or gain followers. About 2000 police personnel formed 500 teams to carry out raids across different areas of the city simultaneously.
Action Against Social Media Reels
Police officials noticed that many young people are posting videos and photos with guns on platforms like Instagram and Facebook. To tackle this, the police teams scanned nearly 6000 social media accounts. They looked for content where individuals were displaying firearms or using songs that promote violence. This digital surveillance helped the police identify the locations of these offenders.
Arrests and Weapons Seized
The operation resulted in significant recoveries and legal action. The police registered 61 FIRs against those violating the law. A total of 82 people were apprehended during the raids, which included 67 adults and 15 minors. The search operations led to the recovery of several illegal items from the accused.
- Weapons Recovered: 69 firearms were seized by the teams.
- Ammunition: The police found 93 live cartridges during the search.
- Sharp Objects: 13 knives were also confiscated from different locations.
Focus on Youth Counseling
Senior officers like Commissioner Satish Golcha and Joint CP SK Jain emphasized that the operation follows a strategy of deterrence and direction. Since many minors were found involved in these activities, the police are also focusing on counseling them. The goal is to break the network that encourages young boys to join criminal gangs through social media influence.
