The Delhi Traffic Police has launched a new initiative to control speeding vehicles on the NH-44 corridor. On Friday, February 6, 2026, the police conducted a trial using handheld laser speed guns near the Libaspur bus stand. During this operation, the team issued 151 challans to drivers violating speed limits. This high-tech approach aims to bring down accident rates in areas known for frequent road crashes.
What are the fines and how does the tech work?
The new handheld laser guns are very advanced and can measure the speed of a vehicle from a distance of 200 to 500 meters. This means the device captures the speed long before the driver notices the police presence. Under the amended Motor Vehicles Act, the fines for overspeeding are strictly enforced.
- Light Motor Vehicles (Cars): ₹1,000 to ₹2,000
- Heavy Motor Vehicles (Trucks): ₹2,000 to ₹4,000
- License Action: Driving license can be suspended for 3 months for repeat offenses
Why was Libaspur chosen for this trial?
This area was selected because it is a major accident-prone zone. Data shows that between 2018 and 2023, there were 68 road accidents in the Libaspur area, out of which 28 were fatal. While there are fixed cameras (OSVD) on the road, they do not cover every stretch effectively. These new handheld devices help bridge that gap.
The trial used 5 laser speed cameras provided by the Global Road Safety Partnership (GRSP). This project is supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies (BIGRS) and was led by DCP Traffic (Northern Range) Sandhya Swamy. The police plan to deploy these guns at other black spots across the city soon.
