The Delhi government has launched a major initiative to tackle the persistent problem of waterlogging in the national capital. Under the first phase of the Drainage Master Plan for the financial year 2026-27, the Public Works Department (PWD) is set to upgrade 300 kilometers of the drainage network. This move aims to provide significant relief to residents who face difficulties during the monsoon season every year.

What is the PWD plan for drainage upgrade?

The Public Works Department has finalized a technical plan to modernize the old drainage lines. Instead of traditional construction methods, the department has proposed the use of RCC Precast Drains. These ready-made concrete drains allow for faster construction and ensure smooth water flow. The officials have set a goal to reduce waterlogging incidents by 50 percent in the next three years. Additionally, the drainage capacity will be increased to handle 70mm of rainfall per hour, up from the current capacity of 25mm per hour.

Which areas and budgets are covered?

This massive project has an estimated total cost of roughly ₹57,362 crore. The government is also in talks with the World Bank for financial and technical assistance. The plan primarily focuses on three major basins to improve water drainage across the city.

  • Najafgarh Basin: This is the largest area with an estimated budget of ₹33,499 crore.
  • Barapullah Basin: A budget of ₹14,547 crore has been allocated for this section.
  • Trans-Yamuna Basin: The estimated cost for this area is ₹9,317 crore.
  • MB Road Drain: A specific project of ₹387.84 crore to build a 22.76 km drain.

Work on critical points like Rohtak Road (NH-10) is also being prioritized, with a target to finish by March 2026.
