A major update has surfaced regarding the controversy over the quality of ghee used in Tirupati Laddus. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu recently alleged that the ghee used during the previous government’s tenure was made from chemicals typically used for bathroom cleaning. However, a new chargesheet filed by the CBI-led Special Investigation Team (SIT) at the Nellore ACB Court provides a detailed forensic breakdown. The probe confirmed that massive adulteration took place but clarified the substances involved.
Forensic Findings on the Ghee Quality
The investigation debunked claims regarding the use of beef tallow or specific bathroom cleaning agents. Instead, forensic tests revealed that the ghee was ‘synthetic’ and contained zero milk fat. The suppliers used a mixture of palm oil, palmolein, and chemical esters to mimic the texture and flavor of dairy ghee. These chemical esters included substances like beta-carotene and acetic acid ester.
Records show that Bhole Baba Organic Dairy and its subsidiary companies supplied this adulterated material. Between 2021 and 2024, these companies provided 68 lakh kilograms of this spurious ghee. The total value of this adulterated supply is estimated to be around ₹250 crore.
Scale of Impact and Legal Action
The scale of this scam is massive when looking at the daily offerings at the temple. The SIT report highlights the following numbers regarding the distribution:
- Total Laddus Made: 48.76 crore laddus were produced between 2019 and 2024.
- Adulterated Portion: Approximately 20.1 crore laddus were made using the synthetic ghee.
- Devotees Affected: An estimated 11 crore devotees received these offerings.
The investigation also pointed out that former TTD chairman Y.V. Subba Reddy reportedly knew about the adulteration issues since 2022 but allowed the supply to continue. Based on these findings, authorities have arrested directors of the dairy company, including Pomil and Vipin Jain, as the legal case proceeds in court.
