The Delhi government is marking its first anniversary today with a major boost to public transport. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta is flagging off 500 new electric buses from Ramlila Maidan. With this addition, the total number of electric buses running on Delhi roads has reached 4,000. Along with the new buses, the government is also changing how the free travel scheme for women works, moving from paper tickets to smart cards.

New Rules for Smart Cards and Pink Saheli

The government has introduced the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) system which will work for both DTC buses and the Delhi Metro. The old system of issuing pink paper tickets for women is being replaced. Now, women and the transgender community must get a ‘Pink Saheli’ smart card to avail of free travel facilities. These cards are linked to identity proofs to ensure they reach actual residents.

There are three types of cards being launched based on color codes:

  • Pink Card: For women and transgender commuters (Free Travel).
  • Blue Card: For general passengers (Prepaid use in Bus/Metro).
  • Orange Card: For students, senior citizens, and monthly pass holders.

Where to Apply and Card Charges

These new smart cards are available only to residents who have a Delhi Aadhaar card and are above 12 years of age. You can apply for them at the District Magistrate (DM) office, SDM offices, or bus depots. For the general public, the Blue Card will cost a minimum of ₹120, which includes the issuance fee and initial balance.

The government has set a target to increase the total bus fleet to 11,000 by the year 2028. Apart from transport, the government highlighted the ‘Atal Canteen’ scheme which provides meals for ₹5, and a direct cash transfer of ₹853 for gas cylinders to ration card holders twice a year.
