What happened in the viral video?
The incident reportedly took place when a rape survivor arrived at the police station with her lawyer to record a statement. In the video, SHO Rajkumar and two women Sub-Inspectors are seen and heard making strong comments. The SHO was heard claiming he has the power to jail anyone and described himself as the ‘owner’ of the station.
The footage also shows the women officers insulting the lawyer. They allegedly called advocates ‘greedy for money’ and threatened that the lawyer would be beaten if he did not leave. The police personnel also reportedly pressured the woman to settle her case and told her not to trust her legal counsel.
Official action taken by DCP South West
The video spread rapidly on social media on February 4, leading to massive protests by lawyers outside the Sagarpur Police Station. The coordination committee of lawyers demanded immediate action against the staff for their behavior.
Following the uproar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) South West, Amit Goyal, announced strict measures:
- Suspension: One woman Sub-Inspector seen in the video has been suspended with immediate effect.
- Transfer: SHO Rajkumar and the second woman Sub-Inspector have been transferred to the district lines.
- Inquiry: A vigilance inquiry has been ordered to look into the complete details of the incident.
The protests were called off after these orders were issued. Senior officials have assured that a fair investigation will be conducted into the conduct of the police staff.
