The Delhi Traffic Police has started using advanced handheld laser speed cameras to catch drivers who cross the speed limit. On Friday, February 6, the police tested five of these new devices along the NH-44 corridor near Libaspur Bus Stand. During this single-day drive, officers issued 151 challans to vehicles found overspeeding in the area.

Why are these new cameras being used?

The police chose the Libaspur area for these trials because it sees a high number of road accidents. Official data from 2018 to 2023 shows that 68 accidents took place in this zone, out of which 28 were fatal. These new laser guns are very accurate and can pick out a specific speeding car even in heavy traffic. The Global Road Safety Partnership (GRSP) donated these units to help improve safety on Delhi roads.

What are the speed limits and fines?

These new devices come with night vision sensors and tamper-proof evidence storage. This means the photos of the number plates are clear and cannot be changed later. Under the Motor Vehicles Act, the fine for overspeeding ranges from ₹1,000 to ₹2,000 for cars. The police generally allow a small 5% margin before issuing a fine.

  • Cars: Limit is 60–70 kmph on highways like NH-44.
  • Two-Wheelers: Maximum speed is 60 kmph on highways.
  • Residential Areas: Speed limit is fixed at 30 kmph for all.
  • Auto/TSR: The limit is capped at 40 kmph across the city.
