The Delhi Traffic Police has stepped up its efforts to stop people from driving on the wrong side of the road. Officials have identified 230 specific locations across the city where this violation happens frequently. To catch offenders, automated cameras have been installed at these spots to issue digital challans directly. While residents feel fines are not enough, police have started registering FIRs against those breaking the rules to ensure stricter enforcement.
What are the fines and punishment for wrong side driving?
The rules have become very strict in 2026 to ensure road safety. The police are not just issuing fines but are also taking legal action under new laws. Driving on the wrong side is now considered a serious offense that can lead to court visits.
- First Offense: A fine of ₹5,000 is imposed on the driver.
- Repeat Offense: If caught again, the fine increases to ₹10,000.
- Jail Time: Police are registering FIRs under Section 281 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). This can lead to imprisonment of up to 6 months.
- Vehicle Seizure: Vehicles found driving dangerously or against traffic flow can be seized immediately. The owner will have to go to court to get the vehicle released.
Which areas are under strict watch?
The traffic police have adopted a “Zero-Tolerance” policy for certain busy stretches. They are monitoring these areas 24/7 to stop violations, especially by two-wheelers which make up nearly 72% of these cases. Recently, police also used laser speed guns on NH-44 to catch speeding drivers.
The following areas have been prioritized for strict monitoring:
- Madhuban Chowk
- Rithala Metro Station
- Shahbad Dairy
- Badli Metro Station
- Sufiyabad Crossing
Additionally, a special traffic advisory has been issued for Monday, Feb 9. Due to an official function at Rajghat from 10 AM to 12 PM, routes near ITO, Delhi Gate, and Shanti Van might see some restrictions.
