A major action has been taken by the Delhi Police following a viral video from South West Delhi. The video showed officers at the Sagar Pur police station misbehaving with a complainant. After the clip surfaced on social media, senior officials stepped in. The Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) for South West Delhi, Amit Goyal, has ordered strict disciplinary measures against the involved officers.
What was in the viral video?
The video recorded inside the Sagar Pur police station showed the Station House Officer (SHO) and two female Sub-Inspectors (SIs). They were seen arguing with a woman who had come to file a complaint regarding a rape case. In the footage, the police officers were heard telling the victim that they had the power to put anyone in jail without evidence.
The officers also made objectionable comments about lawyers. They told the woman that lawyers are only interested in money and that they would beat her lawyer if he came to the station. This specific part of the video caused significant anger among the legal community.
Action taken against the police officers
DCP Amit Goyal took immediate notice of the matter on February 4. The department issued orders late at night regarding the three officers seen in the video. The following actions have been confirmed:
- Suspension: One female Sub-Inspector has been suspended with immediate effect.
- Line Hajir: The SHO of Sagar Pur police station and another female Sub-Inspector have been sent to the District Lines.
- Inquiry: A vigilance inquiry has been ordered to investigate the conduct of all police personnel involved in this incident.
Protest by lawyers and current situation
After the video went viral, a large number of lawyers gathered outside the Sagar Pur police station to protest. They demanded strict action against the SHO and other staff for using abusive language against the legal fraternity.
The coordination committee of the lawyers had planned a larger demonstration. However, after the DCP announced the suspension and transfer of the accused officers, the lawyers decided to cancel their protest. The department has assured that a fair inquiry will take place.
