Details of the missing valuables
DC Garg and his wife Monika Garg visited the bank on January 30, 2026, to operate their locker. They were informed that the locker was no longer assigned to them. Garg had been using this locker since July 2014 and the bank was deducting the annual fee of Rs 2,360 from his account regularly. The victim still possesses the original key of the locker.
Bank records revealed that the locker had been re-allotted to a person named Vikas Chauhan. The family alleges that bank officials broke the locker and handed it over to someone else without any notice or paperwork. The missing items include about 1.25 kilograms of gold bars and jewelry, along with 3 kilograms of silver.
Police investigation and bank rules
Faridabad Central Police Station has registered an FIR against Branch Manager Pawan Rawat and locker operator Neelam under sections relevant to conspiracy and fraud. The police have asked the bank management to produce records, as the initial responses were not found satisfactory. The victim has also escalated the matter to the SBI Chairman and regional managers.
Under RBI guidelines, if a locker is broken due to non-payment or other reasons, the bank must video record the process and make an inventory list with witnesses. In cases of theft or fraud due to employee negligence, the bank’s liability is capped at 100 times the annual rent. The investigation is currently ongoing to locate the missing valuables.
