A tragic accident took place at the 39th Surajkund International Crafts Mela in Faridabad on Saturday evening. A large amusement ride known as the ‘Tsunami swing’ collapsed while operating, resulting in the death of a police inspector and injuries to twelve others. The incident occurred around 6:15 PM when the ride carrying nearly 18 people suddenly tilted and crashed. Authorities have immediately suspended all rides at the fairground.
How did the accident happen at the fair?
Preliminary investigations suggest that a mechanical failure caused the ride to malfunction. Officials suspect a bearing broke, leading to the motor failure and subsequent collapse of the structure. At the time of the crash, the swing was in motion with passengers on board.
Inspector Jagdish Prasad from Palwal Police, who was on security duty nearby, rushed to rescue trapped passengers. Unfortunately, he was struck on the head and face by a falling part of the heavy machinery. He sustained fatal injuries and passed away. Inspector Prasad was scheduled to retire in March 2026. Twelve other individuals, including a stall operator and visitors, were injured and rushed to Badshah Khan Civil Hospital for treatment.
What action is being taken by the administration?
Faridabad Deputy Commissioner and police officials have launched a probe into the negligence. An FIR is being registered against the vendor operating the swing. Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini has expressed grief and ordered a high-level inquiry into the safety lapses.
This was the second mishap at the fair on the same day. Just an hour before the swing collapsed, strong winds caused a welcome gate near Gate Number 2 to fall, injuring two people. Consequently, the police have cordoned off the amusement zone and halted all joyrides indefinitely for a complete safety audit.
