A tragic incident took place at the Surajkund International Crafts Mela on Saturday evening, resulting in the death of a brave police officer. Inspector Jagdish Prasad lost his life while trying to rescue people trapped in a malfunctioning swing. The officer, who was the security in-charge of the amusement zone, was scheduled to retire in March 2026 after 36 years of service. The Haryana government has announced strict action and compensation following the accident.

How did the accident happen?
The incident occurred around 6:15 PM on February 7 when the “Tsunami” swing developed a technical snag. Witnesses reported that the swing tilted to one side due to a suspected bearing failure or a broken support chain. Seeing the riders in danger, Inspector Jagdish Prasad immediately rushed to help evacuate them.
During the rescue attempt, a heavy portion of the swing structure collapsed completely. Inspector Prasad was crushed under the weight and sustained fatal head injuries. Reports confirm that around 19 to 26 people were on the ride at that time, and more than 13 people suffered injuries. The injured are currently being treated at BK Hospital and Supreme Hospital.
Compensation and Investigation Updates
Haryana DGP Ajay Singhal has announced a compensation of ₹1 crore for the family of Inspector Jagdish Prasad. This amount will be provided under the police policy along with other departmental benefits. The state government has also directed that all medical expenses for the injured victims will be covered by the administration.
A Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by ACP Varun Dahiya is investigating the matter. An FIR has been registered against the swing operator for negligence. The authorities are checking the safety fitness certificates of all rides in the fair. The amusement zone has been cordoned off for forensic examination, though the rest of the fair remains open.
