The central government has given the final clearance for a major infrastructure project connecting Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. The Expert Committee of Secretaries has approved the construction of a four-lane bridge over the Ganga river. This new bridge will connect Ara, Ballia, and Chhapra, making travel much easier for people in both states. The total budget for this project has been finalized at approximately ₹1,200 crore.

What is the Route and Project Plan?
The bridge will be built between Mahuli Ghat in Ara (Bhojpur) and Karan Chhapra in Ballia. Earlier, there was a plan for a two-lane bridge, but Union Minister Nitin Gadkari directed officials to upgrade it to a four-lane structure. This change increased the budget from ₹600 crore to ₹1,200 crore.
This new route will link NH-31 in Uttar Pradesh with NH-922 in Bihar. The bridge will pass through areas like Khawaspur, Dhaturi Tola, and Laxman Chhapra. It will provide a direct connection to the Patna-Buxar four-lane highway near Singhi.
When Will Construction Start?
According to former MP Virendra Singh Mast, the tender process for the bridge is scheduled to begin in June 2026. The construction work is expected to start within this year after the contractor is selected. This project will solve the travel issues faced during the rainy season when the temporary pontoon bridge is removed.
Once the bridge is ready, the travel time between Ballia (Bairiya) and Ara will reduce to just one hour. The construction is also expected to help in the development of the Diara area, where new warehouses and small industries might come up in the future.
